Understanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government-backed initiative aimed at making it easier and more affordable for homeowners in England and Wales to upgrade to cleaner, low-carbon heating systems. Traditional heating methods—like gas, oil, or electric boilers—are major contributors to carbon emissions. The BUS helps reduce this impact by offering financial support to people who want to switch to renewable options such as air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, or biomass boilers.
By covering a portion of the installation costs, the scheme removes a key barrier for many households: the high upfront expense. This support not only encourages the adoption of greener technologies but also helps the UK move closer to its climate goals. Whether you’re renovating your home, looking to future-proof your property, or simply aiming to cut down on energy bills, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is designed to make the transition smoother, more affordable, and more accessible.
Big News: More Choice, Bigger Support in 2025
The government has announced exciting new proposals under the Warm Homes Plan, giving families even more flexibility when upgrading to clean heating solutions. Here’s what’s changing:
Air-to-air heat pumps (which offer both heating and cooling) may soon be eligible under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
New ownership and finance options are being considered, including hire purchase, leasing, and monthly payment models.
Record-breaking demand: March 2025 saw over 4,000 BUS applications — an 88% increase from the same month last year.
A £4.6 million investment will expand UK manufacturing of heat pump parts, supporting jobs and reducing supply chain costs.
The government is training up to 18,000 new retrofit professionals, covering heat pump installation, solar panels, insulation, and more.
These developments signal long-term support for clean energy upgrades, making now the ideal time to explore heat pump options. Read the full government press release
What Does the Scheme Offer?
Eligible homeowners can receive:
£7,500 towards the cost and installation of an air source heat pump
£7,500 towards a ground source heat pump
£5,000 towards a biomass boiler
These grants are applied directly to the installation cost, reducing the upfront expense for homeowners.
Who Is Eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
To receive funding through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, homeowners in England and Wales must meet specific eligibility criteria:
Property Ownership
You must own the property where the new heating system will be installed. This includes homeowners, landlords, and second-home owners.
Replacing an Existing System
You must be replacing a fossil fuel heating system, such as oil, gas, LPG, or electric heating.
Note: The scheme does not support hybrid systems (e.g. combining a heat pump with a gas boiler).
Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
To qualify, your property must have a valid EPC issued within the last 10 years. The EPC should show no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation—unless the property is a self-build.
Property Type & Location
Self-builds are eligible, even if newly built, provided they were constructed by or for the first owner and never owned by a business.
Most new-builds are not eligible unless self-build.
Social housing is not eligible.
Biomass Boiler Requirements
Property must be off the gas grid
Located in a designated rural area
Boiler must have an emissions certificate
Installer Requirements
Your system must be installed by an MCS-certified installer to ensure compliance.
Application Timing
The installer must commission and complete the installation within 120 days of grant application.
